The Primary EFL teacher is involved in much more than just teaching facts about how language works. Research has shown that effective and memorable learning in children depends less on memorisation through drilling and much more on the involvement of the whole child: the body and the five senses, the emotions, as well as the brain. Best academic performance happens when the child learns most naturally through play, hands-on activities and total physical and emotional involvement. These findings are being increasingly incorporated into Primary EFL course books and this workshop will attempt to illustrate real examples in real time.
12:40 – 13:30 David Spencer ‘How to Teach Secondary Classes (without losing sanity in the process)!’
Teaching teenagers can often be a challenging experience. This practical session will suggest general approaches and specific activities that can help to make teaching secondary classes more productive and less stressful. Areas examined will include ‘How to encourage students to speak in English’, ‘How to begin and end lessons on a high’, ‘How to deal with mixed ability in the classroom’ and ‘How to correct grammar exercises without students falling asleep in the process’. Also, since Dave is by no means perfect, there will almost certainly be occasional involuntary demonstrations of how not to do things.
