11:20-11:50 – “Assessment as it is Supposed to Be – to Good to be True?”, Anna Kolbuszewska

For the last thirty years, assessment has been a heavy cross to bear for teachers and students alike. The problems associated with it (reliability, validity, the time it takes to prepare, administer and mark, standardised marking, etc.) have had a negative impact on teaching and learning worldwide. The development of digital assessment was seen as just another load. The truth is quite different, though: science fiction is becoming today’s reality. In this session I’ll be showing you how digital tests take the load off your shoulders and lead us to an assessment world more valid, more reliable and less time consuming for everyone.

What makes twenty-first century teaching different from the last century is the recognition that (a) production is the objective of learning, (b) knowledge of required language is crucial to enable production, (c) to enable (a) and (b), the teachers need to manage not one but three environments – the classroom, out of classroom and digital in order to maximise students’ learning. This workshop will look at how we maximise these three environments to ensure successful progress for every student, not just the students we have time for in the classroom.
