Assessing speaking and writing skills with PTE General

12th April 2013

16:00 – 17:00

Understanding the scoring, in at least a basic sense, is fundamental to preparing our students for the test. Once teachers understand the traits we use to score they are more prepared to give their students feedback. The speaker Eric Young will show three samples of writing in response to the same prompt and show how the scoring was decided and why. After that, we will look at two sections from the speaking test: sustained monologue and role play. We will listen to samples and the scoring will be explained.

Speaker: Eric Young has been working in the ESL field in Japan, China, Cambodia, Canada and Poland since 2000. He has been involved in course development and curriculum creation for a variety of schools and programs – focusing on practical material for developing skills and increasing student motivation. In addition, he has written a variety of teacher training material. Currently he teaches full-time in Rybnik, Poland and works for Pearson Education as an Examiner Trainer, Teacher Trainer and Classroom Technology Trainer presenting at conferences across Western and Eastern Europe.
