О темах выступлений:

* Can a picture tell a thousand words?

“The degree to which visuals and videos can generate classroom discussion and increase student motivation is very much down to the way they are exploited. In this provocative talk, I will explore ways in which I have tried to integrate real-world National Geographic content and other video material into both my classes and the OUTCOMES series of coursebooks I co-author”.

– Hugh Dellar

** TED Talks –  Two birds with one stone

“The classroom, or learning in general, can no longer be dull and boring.  Teachers are fighting for the attention of students and with attention spans shortening year on year delivering interesting, motivating and inspiring lessons is becoming ever more important, and increasingly more challenging for teachers. Drawing from TED Talks and other National Geographic Learning resources, this talk demonstrates practical ideas teachers can use to regain the focus of students, re-engage their brains and get them thinking about the wider world around them”.

– Tim Pearse

*** Following the patterns: colligation and the necessity of a bottom-up approach to grammar

“While the idea of collocation — words which often go with often words — has become commonplace in English Language Teaching, the idea of colligationthe grammatical patterns that frequently go with particular words — has yet to have much impact, despite being around for over half a century. In this talk, I’ll be suggesting that an understanding of this crucial concept will revolutionize the way you think about grammar — and lead to better teaching and learning!”

– Hugh Dellar

**** Smooth sailing in the sea of words

“This workshop shows how many of us have a limited grasp of vocabulary frequency because of our availability bias. It also shows how lexical sets can lead to the teaching of infrequent and unhelpful. We’ll consider in more depth the examples we give, how to adapt lexical sets and better use of dictionaries, texts and word lists”.

– Hugh Dellar

***** What NGL and TED Talks can do for you

“This short session will give an overview of National Geographic Learning, its resources and methodology.  We’ll examine the reasoning behind the use of stunning images and video; how the core skills are integrated into courses, and why we believe a non-traditional approach to learning English in this ever-changing world can help students of all ages reach their full potential. The presentation draws on resources from a variety of National Geographic Learning resources including TED Talks“.

– Tim Pearse

О ведущих семинара:

Hugh Dellar

Hugh is married with two kids. He grew up on the south coast of England and in South London and graduated in English Literature from Goldsmith’s College, part of the University of London, in 1991. Like many native speakers, he then drifted into language teaching, only really becoming serious about it during a four-year stint in Indonesia in the mid-90s. He returned to London to do his DELTA and then an MA TESOL and moved soon afterwards into coursebook writing. He worked initially with Michael Lewis and Jimmie Hill, the two men behind The Lexical Approach, a book that influenced him enormously. In his (far too limited) free time, he continues to play in a band, The Beatpack; he wrote for a music magazine and DJs occasionally; he reads voraciously; enjoys cooking, and is a life-long Arsenal supporter!

Tim Pearse

Tim graduated from university in 1997, did his TESOL in 1999 and has been working in ELT ever since in various capacities. In 2013 he started working for National Geographic Learning and is now the Business Development Executive for Russia and Central and Eastern Europe. He’s passionate about the methodology of how to motivate and inspire students; how to bring the classroom to life and how we can integrate a lot more than simply learning the language into English courses. He travels far and wide listening to and picking up ideas from teachers in different countries and cultures – sharing ideas and best practice on how to develop and support teachers and students with engaging resources. Tim is originally from the North of England, is married with two children, and enjoys sport, reading, music and trying to play chess.
